Physical Anthropology

This course covers the concepts, methods and theory of biological evolution and its application to the human species. There is a specific focus on molecular, Mendelian and population genetics mechanisms of evolution, primatology, paleoanthropology, biocultural adaptations, human variation,
and current bioethical issues. The philosophy of science and the scientific method serve as foundations to the course.

Cultural Anthropology

This course is an introduction to the varieties of customs, traditions and forms of social organizations in both western and non-western societies. The main focus of the course is to examine non-western cultures and the social experiences of development. This course provides valuable background
to students interested in multicultural perspectives and/or anticipating involvement in global business opportunities or travel.

These courses are completely online; the introduction/orientation to the course is available on eLearning during the first week of the semester. If you're already enrolled, make sure that you log in to Desire2Learn, view the introductory materials, download (and read) the syllabus, and make an introductory post to the "Roll Call" discussion forum within the first 24 hours. If you don't do this by midnight of the first day of the semester, you will be dropped as a "no show", and your place in the course given to someone else.

If you are requesting an add code, contact me by email by the first Wednesday of the semester. Make sure that you include your name and the course number of the class you're interested in. Please do NOT contact me to ask for an add code until the semester actually starts; I won't have the add codes until then. First priority for add codes goes to students who are on the wait list. If you are NOT on the wait list, chances are very low that I would be able to add you.  If you ARE on the wait list, and you do not request an add code by the first Wednesday of the semester, I may give the code to someone else. I will not add students after the first week, and there is a limit to how many add codes I can distribute. If you decide not to use an add code once you've requested it, please let me know so that I can give the spot to someone else. Please note that being on the wait list does not guarantee an add code. It simply increases your chance of getting one. Students at the top of the wait list get add codes before those at the end of the list, but all students who are on the wait list must request a code.  I will not send them out without a specific request.

Be aware that while these classes are asynchronous (meaning that you don't have set times that you HAVE to log in), it is NOT self paced. There are specific tasks (quizzes and discussion posts) which must be completed each week, as well as other assignments (short essays or similar) due at specified times throughout the semester. There is also a term paper or semester project which will be due towards the end of the semester.

You should plan on logging on to the course management system at least 3-4 time per week, and allowing at least three hours per week for online work (this is the equivalent of 3 hours per week of classroom time in a traditional class). Note that this does NOT include time for reading the assigned textbook or doing homework. Just as in a traditional class, those things are done outside of the time allotted for classroom work. Online classes may be more convenient for you to take, they are rarely easier or less work.
