I think the first two paragraphs in the story that are lacking from the play provide information that shows who Mrs. Hale is. It can make her actions a little more easy to understand throughout the play. Reading the story may be easier to understand because the words are right there in front of you. With the play, however, there is much more emotion put into it and the characters behaviors are more easily understood. I do agree with the idea that the reader could feel more involved when reading the book than when watching the play.
