The opening paragraphs of the story reveal Martha Hale’s character through description of her kitchen. It is very important to notice that description of Mrs. Hale’s kitchen is missing from the play’s initial scene. The reader learns that Mrs. Hale is a very busy, well organized person and likes all work to be done. Through Martha’s description the reader learns about Mrs.Peterson and Mr.Peterson which is very essential for understanding of the story. As we can see, description of Mrs.Hale’s and Mrs.Peterson’s characters are emphasized early in the story but not in the play. By describing their personalities and characters the author underlines the importance of these two women in the story.
