I do agree that in "Trifles," the setting appears to be gloomier than that of "A Jury of Her Peers." However, I can't say that I can determine whether or not the appearance of Mrs. Wright's kitchen is consistent to her character based on just the setting scene alone. Also, I believe that Mrs. Hale's character is much more developed in the introduction of the short story rather than in the play. In the short story, we can read about the state of Mrs. Hale's kitchen, and how she uses that to sympathize with her peer, Mrs. Wright's kitchen. In my opinion, this gives Mrs. Hale more depth as a character in the short story.
