I agree that the short story allows us to gain a better understanding of the characters and their inner thoughts; especially Mrs. Hale. The title "A Jury of Her Peers" makes me believe that Mrs. Wright's peers are the women, rather than both the men and women. This goes back to the short story where Mrs. Hale leaves her kitchen a mess. This allows Mrs. Hale to see herself in Mrs. Wright. To see Mrs. Wright as her peer. This is why I also favor the short story more so than the play. I definitely agree with you when you say "...the title Trifles adds to the conflict as it is used to place the importance of the women far below the men." I couldn't have said it better myself!
