I thought that the story brought the reader into more contact with the characters than the play did. With the story, the author allows you to know what is going on in the character's head, but with a play, you are simply observing what is going on. But, I agree that the actor's can communicate a lot to the audience by their performance and a short story has to go into length to express that detail. However the reader can know exactly what is going on and what the character is thinking or feeling because the author does go into a description of it.
