Exhausted is a good way to describe their fight to try to get out of poverty. Before the play started there was a mention of hopes and dreams. In a sense they already dried up like a raisin in the sun. There dreams had been dried up and deferred as well. I agree that the play "A Raisin in the Sun" answers Hughes' question he proposes in his poem.
