I agree it was necessary for this crisis to happen in order for them to have that realization. Even though all was not realized in terms of the families hopes and dreams they learned a powerful lesson in how to go about achieving them by being forced to choose between selling their house and their pride. Sometimes it is the decision that you do not make that defines who you are as a person and that failed attempt is best used as a tool to learn the greater meaning of things that is out there. Chosing the money may have lead to even more continuing conflict, but then again so could choosing the house as the answer to that question could not be predicted. But what is known is that in the given situation the family made a crucial life decision in chosing to not take the money and put them in what I believe is the right direction.
