Course Content: This course introduces the basic concepts of probability and statistics.  It includes analysis of data, probability, distributions, tests of hypothesis, estimation, regression and correlation, and analysis of variance.  Related applications to psychology, social science, natural science, and engineering will be explored.  A graphing calculator is used throughout the course.  There will be occasional assignments that will involve statistical packages on computers that are located throughout the campus. This is a hybrid class.

Hybrid class requirements: This means that you MUST have access to a computer and be able to access MATHXL.

Course objectives:  Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Prerequisites:  Math 120 with a grade of “C” or better, or placement through assessment.

Materials Required:

Weiss, N (2004) Introductory Statistics with MathXL, 7th ed. Addison-Wesley. ISBN: 0-321-29916-7 (Student version only.  Instructor’s text is considered in violation of the academic honesty policy.)

TI-83,TI-83 Plus, TI-84- or TI-84 Plus (recommend the TI-83 plus)

            MathXL access code

Examinations and Tests:  Test will be administered according to the published schedule.  At approximately the mid-term point there will be a one-hour midterm examination.

Make-up tests are discouraged!  However, if circumstances warrant missing a class AND you have notified me in time, arrangements will be made. This make up test will only be available for two days following the date of the original test.  Please note that make-up tests are generally HARDER than the original test.  There will NOT be a make up for the Final examination.

Homework assignments

Each class session will have an appropriate homework assignment.  These homework assignments will be over MathXL, which is a course requirement. YOU MUST DO THE HOMEWORK ON LINE. There are computers available around the campus.  If you do not have a computer capable of MathXL, see the instructor for ideas on where to find access.   My philosophy on homework is that homework provides you with a method for assessing your progress in the class.  If you are having trouble with these homework tasks, bring them to my attention.  If there is time during class we will discuss them.  If not, I will be happy to help you during my office hours

Attendance Policy

Each student is expected to attend every class.  If, however, it is necessary to miss class, the student will be expected to make arrangements with other students for homework assignments.  Coordinate the absence with the instructor as far in advance as possible. While attendance is not graded, participation is.  If you aren't there, you cannot participate.  Keep in mind that by their very nature, participation points cannot be made up.

Academic Honesty

Each student is responsible for understanding the policies on academic honesty set forth by American River College and the Los Rios Community College District.  Any student found in violation of these policies will be held strictly accountable. Please remember that using a "term paper service" or having another student write your paper is plagiarism. Use of the instructor’s copy of the text is considered a violation of the academic honesty policy.
