Text: · Elementary
Statistics, Mario F. Triola, Addison Wesley, 9th edition
· Student’s
Solution Manual, Milton Loyer, Addison Wesley, 9th edition (Optional)
Calculator: · Each
student is required to have a scientific calculator with a two-variable
statistics package. The TI-83
calculator is highly recommended.
This course will introduce the
basic concepts of probability and statistics.
It will include analysis of data, probability, distributions, tests of
hypotheses, estimation, regression and correlation. Related applications to psychology, social science, natural
science, business and engineering will be explored. A scientific calculator with a 2-variable Stat package (i.e. the
TI-83 made by Texas Instruments) is used throughout the course.
Homework 100
points
3 Midterm Exams
(100 points each) 300
points
Total 600
points
You grade will be determined on the following standard scale:
A 90-100% (540-600
pts)
B 80-89% (480-539
pts)
C 70-79% (420-479
pts)
D 60-69% (360-419
pts)
F Below 60% (Below 360 pts)
Please understand our relationship. I present the material and guide your understanding. Then for exams, I am merely an accountant. I
simply count up the points you earn by your demonstration of mastery of
material on the exams. There is very
little subjectivity in grading my exams (meaning any Statistics
instructor would reach the same conclusions about your point totals). I do not “give” you a grade. I am a neutral party who communicates to you
what grade you’ve earned.
Homework
Homework is essential in order to master the course material and
will be assigned and collected each
class meeting. Staple multiple
pages together or simply put your name on each page. Please do not use the fold-n-tear method to adjoin pages. Homework for each section is worth 2 points
which is designated by a check mark (Ö). A check minus (Ö -) is worth 1
point and is given for homework which is late, incomplete, or with many
mistakes. Homework turned in late due
to an absence is not considered late if turned in the next class meeting. If this is the case, please bring my
attention to this by writing “absent” at the top to ensure receiving full
credit. Homework which is dramatically
incomplete or not turned in will receive a zero (0).
Exams
Midterm exams: There will be
three midterm exams given during the semester.
Midterm exams may not be retaken to improve the score.
~
Important: If you are unable to attend an exam,
arrangements must be made prior to the exam to take it at another time. After the exam has been given, no make-up
exam will be offered. If you do not show up for an exam and do not
contact me by the day of the exam, you will not be allowed to take the exam at
a later time and will receive a score of zero—this policy is without exception.
Cumulative Final Exam: The
final will be given during the last class meeting on July 30th at
6:30pm. No deviation from this schedule
will be allowed.
The Final Exam is on Wednesday,
July 30th at 6:30pm.
Attendance
Attendance in any mathematics course is of the highest priority
since we study sequenced materials (i.e. the math you learn on Monday will be
used on Wednesday). A summer school
course is obviously accelerated due to time constraints. A normal session has 17 weeks of
instruction, whereas we meet only 16 times.
Hence, missing one meeting here is like missing over a week during a
normal session. For this reason,
absences should be avoided at all costs.
A student may be dropped after 3
or more absences. If you stop
attending the class, it is your responsibility to drop. You may not make up exams that you miss
without a medical excuse and a physician’s note.
Students needing more help with the material than can be given in
class should use the following:
The last day to drop to qualify for a refund is Friday, June 13th
(end of 1st week). The last
day to drop the course with a grade of “W” is Friday, July 25th, 2003
(end of 7th week). After
this date, a grade from the above grading scale will be assigned.
I hope that you have a successful and enjoyable semester. If you have any questions or concerns at any
time about your standing in the class, your understanding of the material, fairness,
or anything else, please talk with me.
Keep the doors of communication open.
