COURSE OBJECTIVE: For the student to:
1. Analyze the principles of probability
theory and statistical inference and how they are related to the scientific
method
2. Compare and contrast
different forms of statistical inference procedures
3. Relate and interpret
statistical evidence as it is presented in journals, periodicals and media
4. Use a scientific calculator
to calculate single variable and two variable statistics
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Please bring a Casio fx-300MS calculator and your textbook to class each day.
ALL WORK IN THIS CLASS MUST BE DONE IN PENCIL.
CLASS FORMAT: To provide an enjoyable and productive
learning environment for all students, you are expected to:
1. Be
on time for each class meeting
2. Turn
off your cell phone and not to talk when someone else is speaking.
3. Give
your best effort each day including reading, homework, participation, etc.
4. Work
until class is over.
5. If
absent, obtain notes and handouts from a classmate.
Failure to follow this
format may result in being dropped from the class.
CLASS NUMBER: Grades are recorded by your class roll number.
Write
your number after your name on
all papers.
HOMEWORK: Most students will need to spend 1 to 2 or
more hours outside of class for each hour of class. Assignments are to be completed by the
beginning of class on the due date.
Your best efforts on homework
are strongly recommended, since your own struggles with the material is what
produces lasting results.
The standard homework assignments are to do the odd problems in the
sections covered that
day and also to read the sections that will be covered in the next class
meeting. Collected homework is worth 10
points and may not be made up.
QUIZZES: There will be an undetermined number of
unannounced quizzes, worth 10 points each.
Quizzes are open note and
open book.
Some of these may be done in
small groups.
Quizzes will be based on the
homework and may not be made-up.
EXAMS: There will be 4 tests worth 100 points each.
NO make-up exams will be allowed.
You may use 1 page of notes on
each test.
FINAL EXAM: The final exam is comprehensive and worth 2
tests and is scheduled for:

COURSE GRADES: Grades will be determined on the basis of points
from quizzes, hour exams, and the final exam.
Grades of A, B, C, and D
will be given for 90%, 80%, 70%, and 60% of the total points.
Your lowest exam score AND your lowest 2 quiz/homework scores
will be dropped.
There will also be
opportunities for bonus quizzes.
Consideration will be given
in the final grade for a student’s individual progress. You are welcome to discuss your grade at any
time. Please keep your grade sheet up to
date.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY The giving or receiving of assistance during exams
or quizzes or using an instructor’s edition of the text will be considered
cheating and immediately reported to the campus administration for disciplinary
action.
DROP POLICY: If you wish to drop this course, it is your responsibility to do so.
