ARC Catalog and Schedule of Classes

This class and the students therein will follow the rules and codes of conduct set forth in the ARC college catalog and college class schedule. All students at ARC are obligated to obtain a catalog and familiarize themselves with the appropriate sections on student roles, responsibilities and rights under the catalog.

Classroom Policies

Students are responsible for reading and following all of the instructions in the course syllabus and on any other materials distributed during the course.

Students are also responsible for all information and instructions presented in class whether or not the student is present in class.

Before entering class, all students are responsible for turning off all cell phones, pagers or any other device which would, in the opinion of the instructor, distract the activities in class. Class disruptions caused by these types of devices can result in point loss for the student possessing the offending device. Students who must accept a cell phone call should position themselves close enough to the door, so that by the second ring of the cell phone the student has quietly shut the door behind him or her on the way out of the classroom. Calculators, PDA, Laptops, and similar devices are prohibited during examinations and quizzes, unless specified.

No copying, plagiarism, or collaboration will be tolerated. Unless the instructor specifies otherwise, all work assigned in this class, including homework, laboratory and programming assignments, and all examinations are to be individual efforts. This means that students may discuss projects and how to solve them, but the actual work must be done individually. Submission of a project or examination which is not the student’s own original work is grounds for a programming project or examination grade of “F”, and/or a course grade of "F", and/or DISMISSAL from the course, and/or other action deemed appropriate by the instructor, the CSIT Area Dean or the school Administration. This action also applies to students who allow their work to be copied.

Student Performance

Personal behavior that promotes a classroom atmosphere favorable to effective instruction and learning is always appropriate. Concern and respect for others contribute to such an environment. Students should cooperate by willingly demonstrating interest and responsibility in the classroom. Students will come to class prepared, participate in classroom assignments, complete assignments on time, show respect for other students and the Professor, and talk only when necessary to achieve the goals of the class.

Accommodations

It is critical that every student be provided an environment which is conducive to learning. Please contact the professor if you have any physical or learning disability or other need which might require a special accommodation.

Attendance

Each student is expected to attend every meeting of every class in which he/she is registered. Students will be punctual, entering and leaving the classroom only when class is not in session. It is the responsibility of the student to inform the faculty member if he/she arrives after attendance is recorded. It is the student’s responsibility to get the course notes, handouts, and laboratory assignments should you miss class or be late.

It is very important that you attend every class. You may be dropped from the course if your absences exceed 6% or the total hours the class meets. An instructor is not required to drop a student who is not attending class. If you wish to drop the course, be sure that you submit a drop card with the Admissions Office otherwise you will receive an F grade for the course. Once you have been dropped from the class (for whatever reason), you will not be reinstated.

If you have extenuating circumstances which prevent you from participating in the class or submitting your assignments, CONTACT THE PROFESSOR IMMEDIATELY!

Homework / Laboratory Projects

For most classes, your homework is usually your lab assignments and textbook reading. Each student is required to complete laboratory projects to demonstrate their knowledge of the concepts studied. Lab projects are due as specified in the course lesson plan. All lab projects are due by the end of the class session specified in the course lesson plan. If you do not have enough time to complete your lab project during the lab portion of the class, plan to spend some additional non-class time to complete it. Additional lab hours are available on campus. During certain times of the day some areas of the ARC Computer Lab are reserved for classes, so be sure to check the Open Lab Schedule for information concerning ARC Computer Lab availability. CIS students are almost always welcome in the 152 computer lab. If you have access to a PC with the required software, you may complete your lab/homework off-campus. However, if you elect to use your own PC instead of the PC's in ARC's labs, then "system problems", "network/Internet problems" or "printer problems" is NOT an acceptable excuse for failing to complete the lab assignments on time.

Extra Credit Work

There will be no extra credit work given in this class. A student’s grade is based solely upon the regularly assigned work in the class and upon the quizzes and examinations given in the class.

Grades Available Online

Grades will never be sent out by email.
Most grades for individual assignments will be available during the semester through the learning management system used for the class.
At the end of the semester, final grades will only be accessible through the ARC eServices system.

Evaluation and Grading

The grade in this course will be determined by student performance in each area specified in the specific course syllabus. It is understood that at some time during the course an absence is unavoidable. Usually, missed lab projects or quizzes will be handled by dropping the lowest lab project and /or the lowest quiz score from final grade calculations, but check your individual class's syllabus to be sure.

Online Classes:

Online classes require the same amount of work (reading, lab assignments, quizzes, projects and examinations) as an on-campus classes. The only difference is the delivery method (online versus classroom lecture).

Online Discussions

During the semester you may be required to participate in online discussions or forums. The purpose of these discussions is to stimulate your thinking about the material covered in the course. Points will be given based upon your level of participation in a discussion. Students must provide their own ideas, reactions, opinions, or answers related to the discussion topic or question or to the responses provided by other students. The more thoughtful and detailed the student's responses, the grater number of points he or she will earn. Abusive remarks or attacks against others will not be tolerated and will result in lost points. Online discussions must be completed by the assigned date. No make-ups of discussions will be allowed.

Online Schedule

No online class will be self-paced.

Students must complete readings and assignments based upon the class schedule listed withing the course. Success in this online class is dependent upon reading the text, regular participation in discussions and completion of the assigned work. Information will be presented in supplemental materials and during discussions that is not included in the text. Students will be tested on the material presented in the text. Usually all assignments must be completed by the end of the week, and it is up to the students discretion when to complete the assignments that week. A student may be dropped from the class if she or he fails to submit assignments or fails to participate in any course work during any consecutive seven day period. A professor is not required to drop a student who is not participating in the class. If a student wishes to drop the class, be sure to submit a Drop Request with the Admissions Office (either in person or online) otherwise you will receive an F grade for the class. Once a student has been dropped form the class (for whatever reason), he or she will not be reinstated.

If you have extenuating circumstances which prevent you from participating in the class or submitting your assignments, CONTACT THE PROFESSOR IMMEDIATELY!

Labs

Almost all CIS classes require labs. It is the online student's responsibility to complete the lab. Students may complete lab assignments in Business & Computer Science Area Computer Labs, room 152, or at another ARC computer lab facility if allowed.

Lab assignments must be completed by the assigned date. Under no circumstances will network, system, hardware, or any other problems of such nature be considered an excuse for turning in late work.
