Masaccio
means something like "Sloppy Tom" in Italian. This Florentine painter was known for both his innovative frescoes and his messy appearance.
Caravaggio
is also a place name, a town near Bergamo in Italy.  This artist's lighting style became a major influence on other Baroque painters.
Botticelli
means "little barrel" in Italian.  This Florentine painter and Medici family favorite was originally apprenticed under a goldsmith, "Botticello," known  for his cylindrical body shape.  In another account the "little barrel" nickname was given to the artist's older brother but became adopted as the family surname.
Veronese
is a version of a place name.  This Venetian painter was born and trained in Verona, Italy, and was known for his huge canvas "Christ in the House of Levi."
Tintoretto is an occupational nickname.  This artist's father was a fabric dyer (tintore), so tintoretto means "little dyer." He was one of the most successful Venetian painters from the generation after Titian's death, and known for his dramatic use of one-point perspective.
Hieronymus
is a latinization of the name Jerome, and Bosch is a shortening of the Netherlandish town Hertogensbosch in northern Brabant where this painter lived.
El Greco
means "the Greek" in Spanish.  This artist went from his native Crete to Venice, then to Rome, then to Spain where he spent the rest of his life painting.
Correggio
is another place name.  This painter of the famous "Jupiter and Io" was named for the small town in Emilia (Northern Italy) where he was born.
Titian
is simply an anglicization (English adaptation) of this Italian first name.  This artist dominated Venetian painting for almost a half-century.
