CISC 100 Syllabus

Description: This introductory course provides general non-technical knowledge combined with a hands-on lab on how computers work including basic computer terminology and concepts. The focus is slower paced instruction with extensive hands-on reinforcement of instructional concepts. Course topics include an introduction to the operating system software and application software focusing on word processing, spreadsheets, the Internet and email.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Employ the mouse as a navigational tool to select menus, text and screen options
  • Manage stored files using file management software
  • Choose basic operating system commands to format disks, list, copy, move and erase file, create subdirectories, utilize Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices and change default drives
  • Create, save, and print word processing documents using basic editing and formatting techniques
  • Locate information on the Internet using a search engine and browser
  • Solve business problems using the correct application software tools
  • Name the basic computer components
  • Describe the function of basic computer components

Participant Responsibilities:

  • Attend class and sign the Attendance Sheet. You are responsible for all material and instruction missed due to absences. Suggestion: form a study partnership.
  • If you must drop the class, it is YOUR responsibility to complete the procedure.  I may drop students for lack of attendance without communication by email or phone.
  • You must purchase your own materials and MAY NOT share storage media.
  • Be attentive during lectures. You will not type, read other material, or talk to other students during the lecture.
  • Printers will only be used for CIS1 assignments. You will not print during a lecture. 
  • Be considerate. No cell phones or beepers during class.
  • Complete all assignments and exercises and turn them in on time.
  • Participate in class discussions and exercises. Borderline grades will be determined by the instructor’s perception of your class participation.
  • Follow all computer laboratory rules. Any inappropriate language or images on projects will result in an automatic zero. The instructor determines what is appropriate.
  • If you must leave class early, inform the instructor at the beginning of class.
  • Any copying or cheating will earn zero points - for all participants and may result in college disciplinary measures, including expulsion from the college and  notation on your transcript.
  • If you are a student with a learning disability, a physical disability, or other special needs. All needs that have been verified through the disability centers on campus will be accommodated.
  • Enjoy the experience. Take this opportunity to develop your skills.

Incomplete Grade Only students who have a passing grade at the time that an overwhelming catastrophe, totally beyond the control of the student requires that they discontinue the course will earn incomplete grades.  The student must notify the instructor of such a circumstance before the last week of class and fill out the College’s official form for such a request.

Course Completion: All assignments and graded work must be submitted on or before December 17. No late work will be accepted after the end of the course.
Grades: Grades will be calculated based upon a percentage of the total possible points. It is your responsibility to keep copies of all returned assignments to verify any discrepancy with my grade worksheet.

Course Schedule: This is a tentative schedule of topics and a partial list of assignments for this course.  The Instructor reserves the right modify the assignments and order of presentation.  Students will be notified at least one class in advance of any assignment adjustment.
