Prerequisites:  This class is for students who are comfortable with a Windows personal computer, not true beginners.  Familiarity with Windows operating system, Windows file management, and the use of a mouse is expected. The ability to type by touch will make your assignments easier to complete and is strongly recommended.

Course Description:  This course is introduces the student to the use of electronics spreadsheet programs. The course includes designing a spreadsheet, developing formulas for automatic calculations, using special functions, developing "what if?" models, and producing printed reports. An overview of the graphic capabilities will be presented. The course may be taken three times for credit on a different software package or operating system.

Weekly email and access to the Blackboard site is required.  Lecture and assignments will be posted on Blackboard and any adjustments to the schedule will be noted on the Announcements Page.

Please use your time wisely.  Assignments will require lab time.  Please check the labs’ posted schedule. If you have a computer at home with Excel 2003, feel free to use it to complete assignments.  Use of other software for assignments is NOT acceptable for this class.

Participant Responsibilities:

  • Access Blackboard a minimum of 3 times a week. You are responsible for all material and instruction posted.
    Suggestion: form a study partnership, remind each other of due dates.
  • If you need to DROP the class, you must initiate and complete the process yourself. Failure to do so WILL result in a grade of "F."
  • Read the text chapters before attempting the assignments.
  • Complete all assignments and exercises on time. Labs turned in after due date loose 20%.  Late Labs are accepted up to 1 week after due date.
  • Participate in class discussions and exercises. Borderline grades will be determined by class participation.
  • Follow all computer laboratory rules. Any inappropriate language or images on projects will result in an automatic zero. The instructor determines what is appropriate.
  • Be considerate. Use professional business etiquette and business English in all communications. Good manners, including respect for fellow classmates, are expected.
  • YOU are expected to do your OWN work. Cooperate on GROUP projects, but do not copy another’s work and represent it as your own. Any copying or cheating will earn zero points—for all participants.

Upon completion student will:

  • Use worksheets to make business decisions, including the use of functions, formulas and absolute cell references and to analyze the results.
  • Develop, plan and build a worksheet and illustrate the concepts of design in presenting business information.
  • Create informative charts and graphs to enhance your documentation.
  • Discover the importance of a good documentation or “Title” page to accompany your worksheet package and apply these concepts to “real world” business situations.
  • Develop professional-looking worksheets by applying special formatting skills such as alignments, text wrapping, and the use of borders and shading features.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Investigate and assess various sources of information, especially the Internet to enhance documents and presentations.
  • Develop suitable business communication skil

Attendance: Attendance in class is required. Students with excessive absences (more than 15% of classes) may be dropped by the instructor. Online course attendance is considered as regular email contact with the instructor, on time assignment submission and postings to discussion boards.

Grades: Grades will be calculated based upon a percentage of the total possible points. It is your responsibility to keep copies of all returned assignments to verify any discrepancy with my grade worksheet. There is no extra credit.

Exercises and projects from the textbook and handouts will be assigned every day. Additional projects will be assigned to reinforce your competency and confidence.

For the last day to drop a class without grade notation or with a grade of W see the college schedule.

Grade of Incomplete: Only students with a passing grade may request an incomplete when an overwhelming catastrophe (totally beyond the control of the student) requires that student to discontinue the course.  The student must notify the instructor of such a circumstance before the last week of class and be prepared to provide documentation if necessary

Late Work: All lessons must be completed by the end of the semester in order to receive a final grade.  Responsibility is placed on the individual student to complete all assignments in a timely matter in order to complete the course. Be proactive in contactiing your instructor with any concerns.
