Gene Transfer by Transgenic Plant Methods

Transgene methods for Mi gene transfer

Long Description: When transgene methods are used the Mi gene can be introduced into the L. esculentum genome without bringing along many other L. peruvianum genes. Thus, only one white "page" of L. peruvianum DNA sequence is introduced into the pure red bookstack.

The L. esculentum genome is represented as 100 red books (containing 100,000 pages of DNA sequence information). Transformation of the Mi gene from L. peruvianum into L. esculentum introduces only one "page" of foreign DNA information into the tomato genome. This produces a plant with 99.999 red books of tomato DNA information. Only 1 gene from L. peruvianum has been transferred.
