Long Description: Picture of a microarray showing red, green and yellow spots.
Gene chips enable the expression of 8500 different genes to be tested in a single experiment.
Each spot on the gene chip represents a different gene and the color of the spot represents the level of gene expression in treated vs. control cells. Genes that are expressed predominantly in treated tissue show up as red spots. Genes expressed predominantly in normal tissue show up as green spots. Genes expressed both in normal and treated tissue show up as yellow spots.
This enables identification of genes that all function together (e.g. all expressed in a particular stage of plant development or in response to some change of environmental conditions).
