Abstract

The focus of this project was to find activities in the area surrounding my home that are suitable for toddlers.  I focused on parks, libraries and bookstores, water parks, and some miscellaneous sites, such as zoos and indoor play centers.  The outcome is a list of activities, each with a short description, that are suitable for toddlers and small children.

Introduction

What are we going to do today?  This is a question posed in my house just about everyday.  I figured I would help to create a list of places, events, activities, etc. that would help to answer this never-ending question.  With our house as the center point, I would like to find activities to do with my children within a 10-mile radius.  I am looking for parks, and what those parks have to offer.  Does the park have baby/toddler swings?  Does the park have wood chips or sand as a base?  Does the park have a climbing structure that is safe for a two year old?  Does the park offer benches, trees, drinking fountains, etc.?  What libraries or bookstores in the area offer children's' activities, and for what age and time?  Are there zoos in the area?  Are there water parks in the area?  Are there indoor play areas for those rainy days?  How much do each of these activities cost?  A list of these items would greatly improve my ability as a mom to plan activities for my children.  This list would also be a benefit to the mom's groups to which I belong.

Methods

In collecting data for this project, I used a few different methods.  In most part, I searched on the internet for addresses of parks in my area, and then visited them. On weather permitting days, my daughter and I would spend time at the various parks.  Some of the library and water park information was collected solely from the internet, without a visit.  This was done due to either my daughter being too young to visit, or the weather not permitting a visit.

Results

The activities that I found are listed in the following categories: Parks, Libraries and Book Stores, Water Parks or Parks with water activities, and Miscellaneous.

Parks

(Unless otherwise noted, all parks are free of charge)

Almond Park

5901 Almond Ave, Orangevale, CA

This park has two playground structures, quite a distance from each other.   So, if you had kids at both structures, you would not be able to watch them both at the same time.  One structure is for smaller children/toddlers and includes toddler swings.  It has a woodchip base.  The park is not shaded.  The other structure is for older kids, with great slides.  There are also swings for the older kids.  This structure also has a woodchip base.  There are drinking fountains at both structures.

Orangevale Community Park

7301 Filbert Ave, Orangevale, CA

This is a nice playground.  The play structure is not shaded.  You do have to follow a toddler on the structure, but they can climb on just about everything.  There is a woodchip base.  There are swings for both toddlers and older children.  There are shaded picnic tables.  There is also a horse area right next to the park. The kids can look at the horses, but riding is not available.

Pecan Park

5945 Pecan Ave, Orangevale, CA

Nice play structure.  You do not have to follow a toddler.  The structure is slightly shaded.  There are swings for toddlers.  There is a wood chip base.  Restrooms are available.

Snipes-Pershing Park

5624 Snipes Blvd, Orangevale, CA

Very small play structure.  Kids swings only.  There is a woodchip base.  This park is not for toddlers.

Bannister Park

3820 Bannister Rd., Fair Oaks, CA

There is not a playground at this park.  There is a good hiking trail that leads to the river.

Fair Oaks Park

11549 Fair Oaks Blvd., Fair Oaks, CA

Great playground with climbing structures, slides, toddler and child swings.  Floor cover is rubber mat.  There is a large sand area.  It is shaded all around the playground, and benches and picnic tables are availalbe.  Drinking fountains, and restrooms are also available.

Little Phoenix Park

9041 Phoenix Ave., Fair Oaks, CA

Small playground with climbing structure and slide.  No swings.  Floor cover is rubber mat.  There is a very small sand area.  There is one drinking fountain.

Montview Park

4401 Minnesota Ave., Fair Oaks, CA

Small playground that toddlers can climb on by themselves.  The play structure is not very shaded.

There is a sand base.  There are also two toddler swings.  Restrooms and drinking fountains are available.

Miller Park

8480 Sunset Ave., Fair Oaks, CA

Good playground with climbing structures, slides, toddler and child swings.  Floor cover is woodchip and dirt.  There is no sand area.  Shaded around playground, but not shaded on playground itself.  There is a small creek and a small hiking trail.

Village Park

4238 Main St., Fair Oaks, CA

Small playground, but nice.  There is a woodchip base.  Not much shade.  Swings for both toddlers and older children.  There are a few picnic tables, and a drinking fountain.

Carmichael Park

6825 Fair Oaks Blvd., Carmichael, CA

Great park for toddlers.  A small gate surrounds the playground, so the little ones cannot escape.  You do not have to follow toddlers on the playground.    The base is rubber mat.  There are no swings.  There is a small sand area, and a few picnic benches.  There is some shade.

Sutter Park

Corner of Sutter & Forrest, Folsom, CA

Good play structure that you do not need to follow a toddler on.  Base is wood chips.  There are two toddler swings.  The play structure is not shaded.  There is a shaded picnic area. Drinking fountains are available.

Tippens Park

Corner of Bundrick & Tippens, Folsom, CA

A great play structure.  There is a woodchip base.  There are swings for both toddlers and older kids.  The main attraction is a small water area.  The water area is on a rubber mat about 8ftx8ft that shoots water out from the ground.  This is great in the summer.  There is a very large covered picnic area.  Restrooms and drinking fountains are available.

Nice during the week when it is not very busy.  Be sure to call ahead to check if school groups are there.  It is harder for the little kids when there are a lot of school age children.

Figures and Maps

The following is a map of my house and the various surrounding activities.

The house symbol is my house.

  The green stars are parks

The red squares are libraries and bookstores

The blue dots are water parks

Analysis

I have found that there are numerous parks available.  The problem is finding the parks.  Most of the local Parks and Recreation sites do not list all of the parks available, nor do they give you addresses to them.  I have also found that it is cruel and unusual punishment to drive to a park with a two year old in the car and not get out of the car.  This posed the biggest problem in actually visiting the parks.  Due to the lengthy bad weather that we had, it was hard to find days to visit the parks.  Because we had to actually stop and play at the parks, I could not visit more than one park in a day, so more time would definitely be needed to make a complete list of parks and activities.  I did also find that new housing developments tended to have more neighborhood parks that are not listed anywhere.  You basically have to just come upon these new parks as you are driving around.

Conclusions

In conclusion, this has been a somewhat tedious process, and further research or searching is needed.  I will continue to look for more activities to keep my children entertained throughout the years.
