Lake Oroville is located in Butte County about 1 hour 30 minutes north of Sacramento, California near the city of Oroville.  It is a manmade lake that generates various resources to the local economy.  The water volume at full capacity is 4.363537×109 m3 or 4,363,537,000 cubic meters 4.3 Billion cubic meters of water.  The area around this lake provides for many recreational activities.

History

Prior to impoundment by the Oroville Dam, the current main basin of Lake Oroville was the location of the confluence of the North Fork Feather River with the Feather River (http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?w=17&f=WMA_button2b.png39°33′20″N 121°28′0″W / 39.55556°N 121.466667°W / 39.55556; -121.466667) and the now-inundated towns of Bidwell (http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?w=17&f=WMA_button2b.png39°33′25″N 121°27′56″W / 39.55694°N 121.46556°W / 39.55694; -121.46556) and Land (http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?w=17&f=WMA_button2b.png39°33′13″N 121°28′04″W / 39.55361°N 121.46778°W / 39.55361; -121.46778). Completed in 1968, Oroville Dam is the tallest earthen dam located in the United States, measuring over 770 feet (235 m) high and 6,920 feet (2109 m) across. The dam was the largest earth-fill dam in the world until succeeded by Aswan High Dam in Egypt. It was built by the California Department of Water Resources as part of the California State Water Project. The dam houses the Edward Hyatt Powerplant, an underground hydro-electric plant that was completed in 1967.[6] Six generators are used to provide a maximum generating capacity of 819 MVA.

Lake Oroville has many fish species including:  Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Lake Trout, King Salmon, Coho Salmon, and Crappie.  There are four major Boat launching ramps around the lake.  Lake Oroville has approximately 167 miles of shoreline to fish from giving great opportunities to catch fish.  The fisherman needs to remember it’s called Fishing not necessarily Catching.

Background

I limited my research of 3 items about the Lake Oroville State Recreation area and how it helps out the local community of Oroville, California.  There is an abundant of reasons how Lake Oroville contributes to the local economy but by limiting myself to three items I was able to focus on a few major reasons how the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area contributes to the local economy.

I performed various searches via the internet to find information about the Lake Oroville area.  I then targeted my researched to a few of the websites which had current information about the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area and the local events held throughout the year.

I also talked with some of the local people including a State Park Ranger about the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area.  I was told that Lake Oroville was one of the few parks that actually make money for the Park system.

There wasn’t a lot of information about the history of the Lake Oroville Dam to be found except for the year it was started and finished and the geographic coordinate information of the dam.  There are however additional links under History which takes you to various Wikipedia information about Lake Oroville.

Methods

1.  The water from the lake storage is run through turbines which are used to generate power.

2.  Sport enthusiasts from water skiing to fishing (one of the few areas for year around fishing) utilize Lake Oroville.

3.  LOSRA has one of the few equestrian camps in California for overnight camping with 15 campsites and access to over 18 miles of trails with many amenities of home, including hot showers.

The Hyatt Powerplant is located in rock in the left abutment near the axis of Oroville Dam, Edward Hyatt Powerplant is an underground, hydroelectric, pumping-generating facility. Construction of the plant began in 1964 and was completed in 1967.

Hyatt Powerplant maximizes power production through a pumped-storage operation where water, released for power in excess of local and downstream requirements, is returned to storage in Lake Oroville during off-peak periods and is used for generation during peak power demands.

Water from the lake is conveyed to the units through penstocks and branch lines. After passing through the units, water is discharged through the draft tubes to one free surface and one full-flow tailrace tunnel.

The facility was named for Edward Hyatt, who was State Engineer (1927-1950) of the Division of Water Resources under the Department of Public Works. The Division was the predecessor to the Department of Water Resources

Sport enthusiasts have access to the Lake for most of the year.  Fishing tournaments are held year around.

Fishing Lake Oroville

Fishing is what Lake Oroville is famous for.

Known as the best Bass lake in California, Lake Oroville plays host to several bass tournaments throughout the year. But Lake Oroville isn't just for pros. Everybody has a good time fishing here. The marina rents all sizes of fishing boats, and Bait & Tackle supplies are available, too.

This new state-of-the-art facility features 15 campsites (two horses per site), a restroom with shower facility, a horse washing station and horse tethering and feeding stations. What more could you ask for?

The area features 44 miles of riding and hiking trails traveling from an elevation of 200-1000 feet. The trail meanders by many sights, including an old settler's cabin and an 1850's water flume. It's a beautiful ride.

A trail map, developed by the Lake Oroville Mounted Assistance Unit, is available for $1.50.

Lake Oroville also has one a large Marina for mooring boats.  These boats are of various varieties from fishing boats, to house boats to sail boats.  If you don’t own a boat the Marina also has boats to rent for the day or the week or weekend.

Results

After researching data about the Lake Oroville Recreation Area, I had to weed out data that was useful.  Much of the data obtained was outdated from a few years back so I had to keep researching until I found information relating to current events.  Lake Oroville like other bodies of water is dependent on mother nature and the amount of rainfall that occurs during the year.  This year we have had a very good year for rain and snow pack in the mountains which should make it a good year for revenue from boating and fishermen.

Analysis

The internet was very useful for finding out information about the Lake Oroville Area.  This project was interesting for me since I live near Lake Oroville and was able to gather data about the area and what there is to do for recreation and entertainment is very nice to find out.  There is always something new and interesting that can be found out by doing research.

Conclusions

Having Lake Oroville provides a bunch of resources to the local economy in the form of jobs.  Water Resources, California State Parks are some of the State of California jobs which work directly at the LOSRA site.  The Department of Water Resources generates electricity from the Power plants housed there at the Dam.  The Lake and the Recreation Area provide various forms of recreational opportunities for people and when visiting the area they purchase various items from the local community.

This year there should be more boating because there is an abundance of water storage for Lake Oroville as of May 10, 2011 the lake level is 887.45 feet above mean sea level.  A full pool would be 900.00 feet above mean sea level.  This also means that the active boating season should go much longer than normal.
