Researched Social Policy Presentation
Please Read This Entire Page Before
Posting
As usual, you are required to have a total of 3 postings this week. Your assignment and
two responses.
This week's posting however is worth 35 points (25 for your assignment and
up to 10 points for two
academic based replies to your colleagues postings- as usual there is no partial credit for one post.
To complete your final you get
to be the teacher. You will post the findings and information from your Social
Topic paper in a
way that your classmates can understand your research. Follow the outline format (see below). Space is limited here so we want just the
facts! Try to keep it to 5 paragraphs-- that's the challenge.
Format: Format your presentation as a social issue
that affects the elderly, based on
your research. Be sure that while following the format below you tell us
the problem -- the "so what" -what does it mean to society if this problem
exists? Be careful here. If you say "older people wont have enough income to
live on" my response will be "so what" Why should we care? You might instead
explain if older people don't have enough money to live on they might not take
medications or eat properly putting them into the health care system that public
funds would have to pay for, or that civilized societies take care of their
weakest members.
Write just one or two paragraph for each of the following. May I suggest you copy them
and address each item. Cite data, numbers and tell us where you lot them. If you
say "a lot" or "many" tell us how many in the body of your
work not at the end.
-
What is the social issue? – Describes the problem and how it affects older
adults.
This
should contain your thesis statement or historical context in chronological
order
-
Who is
affected?
This should
support the thesis
-
When
did this problem start or stop? What are the causes?
-
Why
is it a major issue? What are the costs to society?
Use
specific
examples to support your thesis.
Use numbers, facts or dates.
Explain its
place in society.
-
Solution Offer your possible
solution
to this issue. If you were the rule maker for a day how would you fix this
problem?
Use class theory -- draw from text, lectures and your research to solve the
problem. If you want to pay for something explain where the money would come
from (i.e. a new tax, diverted funds, new project etc).
Please cite
your work in the body of the text.
- Put the title of your presentation in the subject line of
your posting.
- Start each section with one of the
above headings. I suggest you copy and paste these five points into your
posting and answer each one. Usually it's best to create your posting in a
word document then copy and past to the board. That way you can put some
thought and time into your posting and you have a copy if it gets deleted.
Show off your knowledge with course content here. Use theory or concepts
studied in class. Show that learning has taken place this semester.
GRADES
- Presentations are graded on the above
criteria at 5 points each, for a possible 25 points. If you want a good
grade put some effort into it. You will need to relate your materials
to what we have studied and show some critical thinking if you want a
superior grade.
- You will also be graded on your
responses to your classmate's postings (at a max of 10 points) based on the quality of your response. While
support for a job well done, or letting your classmate know that they have
provided an interesting paper is welcomed, it will not count as a response.
Instead, use your responses to show your knowledge gained during the
semester, ask questions based on class materials, draw critical conclusions or make other
academic (swag) comments and cite them.
- Feel free to ask
questions since the information presented is limited. If you wait until the last
minute you risk not getting in the required responses. Since this assignment is
worth 50 points you might not want to risk that. So post early
and post often as most of you usually do.
