- First lean about the Boolean Search method to find things on the web. The sites listed below will help you do this .
http://www.nypl.org/blog/2011/02/22/what-boolean-search
Here is a handy little guide: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Boolean.pdf
Many search engines already imply qualifiers when you enter terms. Check out this site.

**Please post a question or comment about this method at the discussion link for this week.
Here is another link I though might be helpful for your research paper click here.
- Assignment Part 2:
After exploring the resources listed below, tell us your opinion about the increase in aging population from any aspect that interests you. I have given you resources below or you can find your own.You can write about jobs, diversity, social issues, or any subject that deals with the increasing number of older adults in America as long as you can back your thoughts with creditable resources (cite them in your post) .
Although emotions are ok in an opinion paper (don't use too many in your FINAL however, because it is a research paper), be sure those opinions and emotions are supported by facts and cited. In other words when you make a statement list the URL where you got the information. Post swags not wags!! (forgot what that is? check the orientation link again)
Resources
First watch this presentation by NCOA- What do you think is the purpose or message of this presentation? You can tell us at the discussion link if you like.https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8Gms2ogdLVE
To see an interactive map of the world and demographics go this cool AARP site: http://www.aarp.org/research/international/map/
You can use the resources below, or find other sites regarding the demographics of aging by using a search engine and the Boolean Search method you learned above. Use terms like age or aging. Refer to your electronic Basic Guide to The Internet if you need help. Or post HELP at the discussion board or in an email to me.
NOTE: You might check out how aging is going to affect you in your chosen work. For example if you are a journalism major, nursing or other major see how aging is going to affect your future.
JUST FOR FUN:
Want to see how long you’ll live – go to http://www.yahoo.com and type in northwestern mutual life longevity game.
OK, if you could not find it, here's the URL!!
www.northwesternmutual.com/games/longevity/index.html
Or try this one http://www.Livingto100.com/
NOTE: Might I suggest that you open a word document and list the facts you want to use in your post as you read, along with the citations. Then write your post. Remember never cut and paste exact words. This is plagiarism
Here are some sites I thought were interesting. Feel free to find your own.
Check out statistics regarding the older population here. http://www.aoa.gov/prof/statistics/statistics.asp
For a good (and brief!) discussion of the demographic transition and epidemiologic transition related to global trends in population aging, see the report from the CDC available at: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5206a2.htm
(remember if it wont load, cut and paste the URL into another browser window- ask if you need help!!)
Fastest Growing occupations: You might discuss how each of these relate to older adults.–http://www.bls.gov/news.release/ooh.t01.htm
Number of Persons over the age of 65 in the U.S. You will need Adobe Reader to download this file. Did you download the free software? http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
http://www.census.gov/prod/2001pubs/c2kbr01-10.pdf
This site explores aging as a trend from a broad perspective.
http://library.thinkquest.org/10120/cyber/extended/demographics.htmlYou might also look for sites on the diversity of the older population. http://www.aoa.gov/prof/adddiv/adddiv.asp
Here is a great online directory to over 700 of the best web sites on aging. Great resource for your research http://www.aarp.org/
internet resources (this site is also listed in the electronic handout section of week four).
Now start writing your opinion and post it to this weeks discussion board. Don't forget to include Part one and Part two of this assignment.
- Extra Credit: (up to 3 points depending on effort) Post with the heading Extra Credit and ground your ideas in facts, TELL US WHERE YOU GOT THEM.
Read the article Faulty Fountains of Youth link located in the handouts for this week . If stem cells held the answer to aging what would our society look like? Would you want to live for ever?
