I believe the short story version gives more intimate contact with the characters. I believe this is achieved because it gives more in depth details on each character. For example: the short story tells how and why Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters came to be at the farmhouse that morning. The short story also told where Harry was and who Harry was. These two facts weren’t explained in the play. Yes, the emphasis did shift. In “A Jury of Her Peers,” it was showed that the women figured out what happened and they are her peers. However, in the play “Trifles”, I believe the emphasis shifted to be on how men viewed the women and the work or rather the life they lead as something of little value or importance, which is actually what trifle means. Even though in the play the question was asked “what would we do without the ladies, “they were still seen as unimportant.
