The opening scene of the story is set in the kitchen of Mrs. Hale’s house. Where as the opening scene of the play is set in the kitchen of Mrs. Wright’s kitchen. I think that establishing the opening scene in the kitchen of Mrs. Hale it gives the sense that Mrs. Hale is a very organized woman and is very good at paying attention to minor details. It also gives the sense of what the kitchen of normal, happy farm wife’s kitchen looks like or should look like. When the play starts in Mrs. Wright’s kitchen you don’t have anything to contrast her kitchen against. You just have to take the author’s word that the kitchen is not in place and that it may be because of her unhappy home life. You also don’t get the feel that Mrs. Hale is the type of person who pays attention to small details.
