In the opening of the story, Martha Hale is about to leave her kitchen. She notices the mess around and that everything is half done in the room. Even though "It was no ordinary thing that called her away," she still noticed the unfinished mess around her kitchen. In the play, she is in the abandoned farmhouse of John Wright. The description is obviously designed for drama as all of the examples are readily accessible and spelled out. It is a more visual representation of leaving unfinished work around.
