In the story there is a beginning that is not in the drama at all. There is a description of not only the sheriff's wife as in the play but also of the sheriff himself. Also, there is a description of the time of year and the gloomy environment. It also says that the men are talking and has one extra line of dialogue between Mrs. Peters and Martha Hale. The story more sets the environment and setting in detail than the drama does.
