Good observation about the "description of the time of year and the gloomy environment" which is very important for understanding the meaning of the story. You are absolutely wright that the author provides the reader with detailed description of Mrs.Hale, sheriff and his wife. I think that understanding their characters and personalities is helpful in understanding the story. YOu have good observation skills!

>In the story there is a beginning that is not in the drama at all. There is a description of not only the sheriff's wife as in the play but also of the sheriff himself. Also, there is a description of the time of year and the gloomy environment. It also says that the men are talking and has one extra line of dialogue between Mrs. Peters and Martha Hale. The story more sets the environment and setting in detail than the drama does.
