The opening scene of the story differs from listening to the play because it evokes a kind of generic and unemotional feeling. The story indicates that Martha Hale hates to see her kitchen in a mess but really doesn’t convey the almost desperate feeling that the play indicated. In the play, the sound effects and Martha's voice reveal a harried and desperate situation as she tries to remember whether she's got her ingredients right or not and the mess. Also, when reading the part about her husband calling her out to go, it didn't relate as much feeling for me as the play did. The play couldn't tell us that she ran back for her "big woolen scarf", but I found that I was trying to imagine the people, setting, and characters much more so in the play.
