True, having sound effects can help out a drama. But using one's imagination is also a way of seeing a play pan out. In comparing reading the play and reading the short story, I would much prefer the short story. The author places more emphasis on what the characters are feeling. Like you said, you imagine the characters and setting in the play. The play allows the reader to become more open to interpretation, and using their imagination.
