I thought in the play the opening scene was in the Wright's kitchen not the Hale's kitchen. The whole first part about Mrs. Hale's kitchen is not in the play. Which gave sufficent backround on Mrs. Hale that helped understand her actions better. The play immedietly starts in Mrs. Wright's kitchen that is gloomy and messy. This explains Mrs. Wright's state of mind throughout the story.
