I agree, short stories generaly bring readers into more intimate contact with the characters. Between reading a play or a short story, I would opt for the short story. This is because like you said, in a play, the emotions are usually left out. Watching or listening to a drama is different. Because of the "action," the audience can now generally feel the character's emotion. Great insight!

Short stories generally give the reader more character development. Since dramas are meant to be performed, usually there is no back-story behind the character. Drama will only show the reader the dialogue between the two characters. Only through dialogue can the reader understand the situation and expression of motivation. Usually dramas focus more on action, then emotion.
