That is a really good observation that a play focuses more on action than emotion. With a short story we understand why the characters act the way they do, but when reading the play, we have to decipher through all the dialogue what exactly is going on. I also agree the short story does give more character development than the play. The story gave a lot more information about Mrs. Hale, especially in the begininning, than the play did.
