Edna was an independant woman, who began to break out of the role of a traditional mother and wife. She did not feel that being a good wife and mother was all there was. Adele was totally wrapped up in her position as a wife and mother. She found her identity in that. Mr. Pontellier was a strong authoritative man who liked his material possesions. He was involved heavily with his business and that was sometimes all he would think about. Robert was very interested in the female sex and would rather spend time with them than always talking business with the other men. He was younger and more sexual than Mr. Pontellier.
