I dont really think Robert every truly cared about Edna's feelings it was more of a wanting what you cannot have type of relationship as when she was available I think it scared him to know that and it ruined his fantasy. Robert did seem to show more attention to her, but I think that was only so apparent due to the perception that Mr. Pontellier was so absent and aloof in the relationship not necessarily because Robert truly loved Edna in any way.
