Hearing the poem and reading how the elements of poetry work in this poem changed my first impression and enhanced my understanding of the poem. Learning about irony in “The Fish” helped me understand the meaning of the last line. Catching the fish is presented in the poem as a victory but I didn’t notice before that the fish didn’t fight at all. It means that it wasn’t hard to catch the fish. If it wasn’t hard then what kind of victory was it?
