I think that the fish didn't fight at all anymore because maybe it was tired of always having to fight in the past, which explains the many hooks it had. As for the victory, I guess thats probably why the catcher decided to throw the fish back. Good insight!

Catching the fish is presented in the poem as a victory but I didn’t notice before that the fish didn’t fight at all. It means that it wasn’t hard to catch the fish. If it wasn’t hard then what kind of victory was it?
