Learning about the elements of peotry also helped me to better understand the meaning of the poem.I had about the same feelings as you did about this poem. I think it is a very sad poem because the boy doesn't have the best memories from his past about the father. However there is an implication that the father was not a bad man because he had hands of a hard working person.
Gaining an understanding of the elements has allowed me to really be able to dissect the poem. Though my understanding of this specific poem was on track, I have a greater appreciation for the poem as an art. I now see the elements of meter, alliteration, and image in the poem, just to name a few.
