ACADEMIC STANDARDS
Academic Renewal without course repetition.
A student earning substandard grades may choose not to repeat the course, but does not want to have his/her grade point average effected by it. The student can then elect to apply for Academic Renewal.
To have a substandard ( D, F) grades discounted in the computation of the grade point average, the following conditions have to be met:
1. the grade(s) no longer reflect the student's current educational objective and current level of academic success
2. Current educational objectives must be discussed with a counselor and a Student Petition has to be filed with a counselor's signature.
3. Three semesters (Summer can be counted as one "semester" if the student actually attends) have elapsed since the substandard grade(s) was/were earned and 12 units of "C's" or better have been completed by the student either at ARC or any accredited institution.
4. Under no circumstances may course work can be discounted if it was used to fulfill requirements for a degree or certificate that has been granted.
5. All grades will be shown on the permanent record and transcript of grades.
6. No more that 30 units of substandard grades may be discounted through this procedure.
Repetition of Courses
A student may repeat, only ONCE, a course taken in an accredited college for which substandard grades were received. For purposes of course repetition, substandard work is defined as a D, F, or NC grade. Once completed, the second grade is used exclusively in determining grade point average, regardless of whether this grade is higher than the first grade or not.
A "Substandard Grade Repeat Form" can be filed with the Records and Admissions Office to have the second grade is computed in the grade point average. Without this form, the repeat will only be processed when student's record is evaluated for graduation or for a certificate.
Removal of "W" notation:
Under extremely extenuating circumstances, a "W" notation can be removed from a student's permanent transcript. Click on the "Remove W" to see the exceptions.
