BUSTEC 101 - Computer Keyboarding: 10-Key

Course Description: 

This course introduces the numeric keypad and develops the ability to key information into a computer with speed and accuracy. Simulated employment tests based on industry standards are included. Ten-key certification testing is available.

Advisory:  Bustec 300 or a keyboarding speed of 30 wpm.

Student Learning Objectives:

This course introduces the numeric keypad and develops the ability to key information into a computer with speed and accuracy. Simulated employment tests based on industry standards are included. Ten-key certification testing is completed at the end of the course.

Materials Required:

  1. 10-Key Mastery on the Computer by Barbara Ellsworth, 1998 – 2004.
  2. A valid e-mail address
  3. Access to the Internet: You will need to access the following websites.
    1. Publisher’s website at –www.keyboardingonline.com – All work will be completed at the publisher’s website, DO NOT save work on your home computer.
    2. Blackboard at – http://D2l.losrios.edu – Homework assignments, course communications, and other instructions will be posted here.
  4. Java Software: Available at www.java.com

Course Procedures: 

bullet Students work at their own pace within the weekly parameters provided on the assignment sheet. 
bullet All students must be able to key by touch with the appropriate technique.  Failure to meet the technique standards as outlined in the book will result in the final grade being lowered a full grade point.
bullet All lessons are timed and should be practiced repeatedly.  It is recommended that students work on lessons several times a week in order to improve technique and scores.
bullet All lessons must be completed by July 31 at 5:30 p.m.
bullet No late work will be accepted for the course. 
bullet The Progress Report will show only the best scores that meet the course standards of 98% accuracy.

Student’s Responsibilities:
bullet Each week, students will be required to access the Internet to upload their progress to the publisher’s website. You will need the following user ID & password:                       This will be provided to enrolled students through D2L.
bullet Responsibility is placed on the individual student to complete all assignments in a timely manner in order to complete the course.
bullet Students will be required to pass a final exam.  This will be an in-class performance of the 10-key time scheduled for Saturday, July 31 at 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in room 122/123. 
bullet NO MAKE-UP EXAMS ARE GIVEN.
bullet YOU are expected to complete your own work.  Do not copy another’s work and represent it as your own.  Any copying or cheating will result in a zero (0) for all participants. 
bullet If you need to drop the course, students must initiate and complete the process themselves.  Failure to do so WILL result in a grade of “F.”

Grading Standards:

Lessons*               1 - 22 = 30 percent       A = 12,000 weighted strokes/hour – 98% accuracy

                                    23 = 5 percent         B = 10,000 weighted strokes/hour – 98% accuracy

                                    24 = 35 percent       C =   8,000 weighted strokes/hour – 98% accuracy

                                    25 = 10 percent       D =   6,000 weighted strokes/hour – 98% accuracy

                                    26 = 10 percent

                                    27 = 10 percent          

*Only the best speed from each lesson will be calculated in the grading.

Grade Calculations: 
Grades will be calculated based upon a percentage of the total possible points.  Grade calculation will be based on the following:
