Contemporary Reviews of The Awakening
In this case "contemporary" means the reviews that came out when the novel (considered somewhat scandalous) was published in 1899. These are very interesting reviews reprinted from the Norton Critical Edition of the novel.
This document was presented at the first conference to address Women's rights and issues in Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848. Although the conference took place fifty years before the publication of The Awakening, it is probably a bit closer to the setting of the novel than that. In any case, it provides an interesting lens through which to view The Awakening as the issues raised by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Committee had certainly entered the consciousness of the American people even if overshadowed by the Civil War.
The document can be found all over the Internet, but this link includes a brief background that will be helpful.
