ComputerImportant Note: This class meets entirely online via Desire2Learn.

Hello and welcome to my distance education Psychology 300 class at American River College!  This semester you will explore many psychological concepts and theories through a variety of activities, and I am excited about exploring them with you!

This course provides a broad overview of general principles of psychology.  Topics include the scientific method, statistics, biological determinants, as well as general processes of behavior, such as development, learning, language, intelligence, perception, motivation, emotion, personality, and mental health.  By the end of the semester you will be able to:

  2. Describe the general subject areas of psychology.
  3. Differentiate between commonly used research methods in psychology and their applications.
  4. Apply psychological concepts, theories, and research findings to personal, interpersonal, occupational, and social/community contexts.
  5. Incorporate systematic critical thinking in arriving at conclusions about behavior and mental processes.
  6. Examine the role that culture and diversity play in various aspects of human behavior and mental processes.
  7. Distinguish between the ethical implications of psychological research and the responsibility to pursue and use knowledge wisely

Wait Listed Students

Anxious Smiley FaceI will be distributing permission numbers via email beginning Friday, January 13, based on available spots on the roster.  Students must have an activated iMail account at ARC to receive their permission number.  Failure to do so may result in forfeiting your position on the wait list.  Instructions to activate your iMail account are available by clicking here.

  • Access to the class website (http://d2l.losrios.edu) will be available within 48 hours after official registration with eServices.

  • All students on the wait list should complete the Online Orientation by Friday, January 13.  Those waitlisted students who decide that this isn't the right class for them should officially drop the class with eServices.

  • Students on the wait list that have not received a permission number by Saturday, January 14 unfortunately I wasn't able to add you.

  • If you are a student that is not on the wait list please do not send me an email requesting a permission number - I will only distribute permission numbers to a small number of lucky students that are on the wait list on the first day of the semester.

FAQs

How many hours a week should I expect to spend working on this 16 week online class?

Students should expect to spend at least 3 hours online, equivalent to face-to-face class, plus an additional 3-4 hours per week studying and working on assessments.   Some weeks will have more work than others.  However there is no minimum time required; students must get the required work done in however much time it takes.

Am I required to login at specific times during the week?

Students are not required to login at any specific time during the term except for quizzes and exams which are always made available during a 7-day assessment window (Mondays - Sundays) as scheduled.  Students that might have a conflict with these testing windows can request an alternate 3-day window.

Is this a self-paced class?

Yes and no.  The class is divided into 5 different learning modules.  I will release one module at a time, which allows students to work ahead within the module, but not beyond the module.  There may be occasions when modules overlap during a week, which would allow a student to work ahead to the next module.  Quizzes, exams, essays, and projects can only be completed as scheduled.

Do I have to use the specified required textbook or can I use another text or previous edition?

I require that students use the textbook that is posted in the ARC Bookstore, however students can purchase the text from any vendor.  Although there will be considerable overlap from one introductory psychology textbook to another, the pagination, current events, and content will not always synchronize.  This is also true of outdated editions of the textbook.  Hence it is up students to decide if they will be successful without purchasing the textbook that is required.
