Module D - Why do people do the things they do?

Picture of a man with glasses and a puzzled look on his faceWelcome to my very favorite learning module!  This module was created because this is one of the most commonly asked questions by introductory psychology students.  In this learning module you will explore some of the factors that influence the attitudes that we hold as well as the behaviors that we engage in.  You'll learn about the influence of internal and external factors and how they work together and result in the behaviors and actions that we engage in.  How could somebody inflict pain on another person?  Why do kids bully each other?  Why do I get to work on-time?  These are some of the questions that you will be better equipped to answer at the end of this module.

Lesson 3 - Lessons in social psychology
.

This lesson is probably my favorite from the entire semester!  In this lesson you will explore a variety of concepts from the social psychology field which attempts to explain how our social environments can affect our behavior and attitudes, and vice versa.  This lesson is filled with lots of theories and concepts that I am pretty sure will interest you as much as it does me.

The objectives for this lesson are pretty self explanatory but there are many of these concepts that can be further explored online, which I encourage you to do.  For example you can learn more about cooperation as a method for dispelling prejudice in The Jigsaw Classroom; you can explore the factors which influence helping behavior in From Jerusalem to Jericho; you can read about the Stanford Prison Study and why nice people do mean things; you can see how easily prejudice can be created and its impact by viewing A Class Divided; you can also take a test to measure your prejudice at Project Implicit.  Infusing my other interest in neurobiology you can read about the relationship between Race and the Brain as well.
