This course will introduce basic concepts of probability and statistics. It will include analysis of data, probability, distributions, tests of hypothesis, estimation, regression and correlation, and analysis of variance. Related application to psychology, social science, natural science, business and engineering will be explored. A scientific calculator that has a stat package (2-variable) is used throughout the course. Prerequisites: The official prerequisite for this course is Math 120 (Intermediate Algebra) with a grade of C or better. Accepted for Credit: AA degree, CSU/UC Textbook:
Elementary Statistics: Picturing the
World, by Larson/Farber (4/E -- 2009) packaged with MyMathLab/StatLab
(online), is available in bookstore. Material to be Covered: Chapters 1 - 10 Learning Outcomes/Course objectives include:
Scientific Calculator: A scientific calculator with a complete stat package (one and two variable) is required, i.e. TI36X. A graphing calculator such as a TI83 or TI84+ is highly recommended. Computer: Computer assignments will be made and may be completed either in the LRC (Learning Resource Center - new building) or at home (providing your computer has the following specs and software -- see below). Additional Materials needed: All quizzes will be taken in appropriate blue books (large -- 8 1/2 by 11 inch). Graph paper will be required for exams and miscellaneous work. Determination of Your Grade: Your grade in this class will be based on your scores on the exams, quizzes/homework, and final. The total points possible will be approximately the following...
For grading purposes, your lowest 100 point exam may be replaced with half of the final exam score -- no late make-ups are permitted. Since I do provide several opportunities for "bonus" quizzes/certs, there will also be no make-ups on quizzes or homework. Grading will be by percentage...
