Course Code:  19774 -- Room 170 TTh 12:00 - 1:20 PM
Course Code:  19630 -- Room 170 MW 8:00 - 9:20 PM

This course will introduce basic concepts of probability and statistics. It will include analysis of data, probability, distributions, tests of hypothesis, estimation, regression and correlation, and analysis of variance. Related application to psychology, social science, natural science, business and engineering will be explored. A scientific calculator that has a stat package (2-variable) is used throughout the course.

Prerequisites:  The official prerequisite for this course is Math 120 (Intermediate Algebra) with a grade of C or better.

Accepted for Credit:  AA degree, CSU/UC

Textbook:  Elementary Statistics: Picturing the World, by Larson/Farber (4/E -- 2009) packaged with MyMathLab/StatLab (online), is available in bookstore.
All of your homework assignments will be either out of the book or software.  Also, the book/software will be useful for examples and explanations of the material covered.

Material to be Covered:  Chapters 1 - 10

Learning Outcomes/Course objectives include:

  • Analyze the principles of probability theory and statistical inference and how they are related to the scientific method.
  • Compare and contrast different forms of statistical inference procedures.
  • Relate and interpret statistical evidence as it is presented in journals, periodicals and media.
  • Use a scientific calculator and computer to calculate single variable and two variable statistics.

Scientific Calculator:   A scientific calculator with a complete stat package (one and two variable) is required, i.e. TI36X. A graphing calculator such as a TI83 or TI84+ is highly recommended.

Computer:  Computer assignments will be made and may be completed either in the LRC (Learning Resource Center - new building) or at home (providing your computer has the following specs and software -- see below).

Additional Materials needed:  All quizzes will be taken in appropriate blue books (large -- 8 1/2 by 11 inch).   Graph paper will be required for exams and miscellaneous work.

Determination of Your Grade:  Your grade in this class will be based on your scores on the exams, quizzes/homework, and final.  The total points possible will be approximately the following...

Evaluation Prcess

3 Exams (100 points each)
300

Quizzes
(5 - 20 points each)

100
Computer Assignments - MyMathLab/StatLab
100
Comprehensive Final Exam
200

Total
700

For grading purposes, your lowest 100 point exam may be replaced with half of the final exam score -- no late make-ups are permitted.    Since I do provide several opportunities for "bonus" quizzes/certs, there will also be no make-ups on quizzes or homework.

Grading will be by percentage...

Grades - Points
.90 (700) = 630  A .70 (700) = 490  C
.80 (700) = 560  B .60 (700) = 420  D

Dates to Remember:
Holidays: January 19, February 13&16, April 6-12
Deadline to Drop: January 30 -- refund, February 15 -- w/o notation,
April 19 -- w/ notation
Final Exam: Tuesday, May 19; 12:45 – 2:45 pm (course #19774)

Final Exam: Wednesday, May 13; 8:00
10 pm (course #19630)

Statistics is not a spectator sport.  Attendance, participation in class, and completing assignments/understanding the concepts in a timely fashion, are key factors to your success in this course.  Study groups are encouraged.
