Keyboard Technique

Keyboarding is a skill requiring specific physical and mental practice to master. Take advantage of this course to improve your skills by practicing proper keyboarding technique for touch typing.

The physical component of posture is covered on the linked page.

To key properly:

  • Keyboard position should be adjusted to your seated position with your feet flat on the floor or other support surface, centering the keyboard in front of you with the center of your body aligned with the H key.
  • The monitor should be adjusted to your seated eye level so that your head and neck are in good posture alignment.
  • Your fingers should "float" over the home row at all time. You may check this by touch with index fingers of each hand noting the bubbles on the F and J keys. Floating allows reaching the upper or lower key rows preventing mistrokes.
  • Fingers should return to the home row between each reach to the upper or lower rows.
  • Eyes should be on the copy or text you are keying or on the screen if you are composing. Do Not look at your fingers or the keyboard.
  • Keying letter for letter instead of word for word will result in much faster typing. Word for word typing depends on spelling skills and may result in an increase in errors.

The mental component requires determination on your part to key properly and with discipline on a regular schedule. Your success depends on your self discipline and motivation. Regular contact with your instructor with questions or concerns will increase your success.
