Marker-Assisted Breeding - Tomato Mi gene

Nematodes are microscopic worms. Certain nematodes cause disease by infection of tomato roots. Traditonal tomato cultivars are susceptible to nematode infection. The Mi gene for nematode resistance was found in the wild tomato L. peruvianum. Tomato plants containing the Mi gene are resistant to infection by this type of nematode.

Embryo culture and backcrosses were used to transfer the Mi gene into tomato cultivars.

(Pictures of tomato roots exposed to nematodes. Plants with the Mi gene for nematode resistance have normal roots. Plants with the mi gene for nematode susceptibility have disfigured roots showing signs of nematode infection.)
