Nematodes are microscopic worms. Certain nematodes cause disease by infection of tomato roots. Traditonal tomato cultivars are susceptible to nematode infection. The Mi gene for nematode resistance was found in the wild tomato L. peruvianum. Tomato plants containing the Mi gene are resistant to infection by this type of nematode.
Marker-Assisted Breeding - Tomato Mi gene
Embryo culture and backcrosses were used to transfer the Mi gene into tomato cultivars.
