Long Description: Mutant isolation or gene discovery (1 - 2 yr) Germplasm development: transgenic or mutant (1 - 2 yr) Elite variety development (3 - 5 yr) Production of planting seed (1 yr) Initial sales of new variety (1 yr) Large-scale planting of new variety (1 yr) Patent applications would be made in the first four years. Yield testing, regulatory approvals, and product application testing would be done during elite variety development.
