Long Description: When using traditional breeding methods the tomato gene pool is limited to the sexually compatible wild species L. chmielewskii, L. hirsutum, L. parviflorum, L. pennellii, L. cheesmanii, and L. pimpinellifolium.
Long Description: Tissue culture methods expand the tomato gene pool to include more distantly related wild species such as S. lycopersicoides, S. sitiens, L. chilense, L. peruvianum, S. ochranthum and S. juglandifolium.
The size of the gene pool limits the traits that can be developed in
crop plants via traditional breeding and tissue culture methods
