Instructions for Final Presentation: Based on your Interview

Please Read This Entire Page Before Posting This week's posting is worth 50 points (35 points for your assignment and 20 points for two responses- no credit for one response). You have until  the end of the week to complete the minimum of 3 posting (your assignment and at least two responses). Sorry, no credit for partial responses.

During this semester we have studied and discussed the very subjective topic of successful aging.  You have completed web assignments, discussion forums, and projects that addressed successful aging. To see successful aging in action you were asked to choose an elder to interview who, in your opinion, had aged successfully.

This week you need to explain to us which theories you selected  that gives her/him the privileged title of ageing successfully.  This is based on the six areas of posting you need to cover. You might want to recheck the interview instructions for complete details. Here is the outline below.

bullet

1.   A brief explanation of the three theories or concepts you plan to apply to show this person has aged successfully. Explain how these theories relate to successful aging.

bullet

2.   A brief biographical sketch of this person's life- briefly tell their life's story as it relates to those theories. For example you might say when he/she was young the loved to play the piano. Today, because of arthritis they can no longer play. They do however give piano lessons ( a good example of continuity theory). Or this person has a garden and grows their  own fresh vegetables.
You might relate this to nutrition and aging.

bullet

3.  Your interviewee's interpretation of what successful aging means to them.-  what do they attribute their successful aging to?  Do you believe that their views are grounded in theory or are they ageist, stereotypes, or inaccurate. Explain and cite this.  For example, the may tell you that they have aged successfully because they don't get involved with other people .You need to be able to evaluate this according to the theories you have learned.

bullet

4.  Your assessment of their life choices.  Considering the answers from the sections of interview questions ( Family, Daily life, Health, Mental health etc.),  what  life-style patterns or decisions do you believe has helped them age successfully? Which were detrimental?  Is there a theory attached to your evaluation?

bullet

5.  Your personal definition of what successful aging means for you.- What criteria do you use to define successful aging. Where did they come from?

bullet

6.   Does your interviewee have qualities you would like to have when you age? What changes will you make in your life to ensure successful aging?

Remember the term is subjective. It's what ever the person describes as successful. It does not necessarily mean activity, money or other stereotypical items.  I want you to ground these ideas in theories you have learned in class. NOTE OF CAUTION. If you use activity theory as many of you will be sure you understand it and its implications. While physical activity is desirable this is not the entire interpretation of this theory.

If after the interview you changed your mind as to weather or not this person was aging successfully then tell us  what changed your mind and again ground it in class theory.  Cite the body of your work.

As usual, you are also required to respond at least twice to your colleagues postings .  While postings of a job well done and encouragement is welcomed, they will not count as postings required for this assignment. Instead, use the forum to further discuss the subjective nature of successful aging, the theory (ies) presented or other knowledge that will show what you have learned during this semester. Tell us where you got it -- cite it if you want a shinning grade. As always I'm just  a click away if you need help. -- smile, this is your last required posting. YOU did it!!

Last Note: Musings from Sue

It is always at this point in the class where I ask myself if I taught you everything you need to know. No, I have not. I can not in one class. Instead I have just scratched the surface. I hope this class will forever open your eyes to the elderly around you and inspire you to take steps to age successfully yourself. If you have not taken the following courses, I will be teaching them in the spring.

One is on line the other is face to face.
