My interest in Gerontology started when I was just 5 or 6 years old. I always felt comfortable as a child hanging out with all the elderly ladies on my block. They taught me to garden, cook and shared their views on life with me. I always found them more interesting than the neighborhood kids.

I worked my way through a continuum of interest first as a Critical Care Nurse then to Public Health. In the process of administering and creating new programs for older adults I discovered that there were not enough qualified people to work with the elderly. I wanted  to  correct that problem and began teaching. 

On a personal note, I live in the foothills of the Sierras surrounded by trees and natural beauty. I garden organically and try to live an earth-friendly life style (which my friends say is an oxymoron because I love technology!) But wait, I say, can't technology save trees and air pollution ? Aren't we living gently on the planet by not driving to campus or using paper to print handouts and assignments? That's the debate!!
