About Your Instructor

My interest in Gerontology started when I was just five or six years old. I always felt more comfortable as a child hanging out with all the older ladies on my block. I worked my way through a continuum of interest first as a Critical Care Nurse then to Public Health where I administered a grant from the Older Americans Act that provided home visit to people who were both isolated and elderly.

In the process of administering and creating new programs for older adults I discovered that there were not enough qualified people to work with the elderly. I wanted to correct that problem and began teaching. My passion has been to credential gerontologists and establish legal requirements for working in the field. I have been fortunate enough to help craft legislation, testify before Senate Committees with esteemed colleagues, serve on the board of directors of many senior organizations (including the National Association for Professional Gerontologists (NAPG) http://www.napgerontologists.orgNAPG which established the first credentialing requirements for gerontologists), and have presented my research entitled "The Need For Gerontology Education" at Oxford University Roundtables.

On a personal note, My husband and I live and thrive in the foothills of the Sierras surrounded by trees and natural beauty. I garden organically, raise chickens for fresh eggs, and have tried to live an earth-friendly life style for nearly 50 years, which my friends say is an oxymoron because I love technology! But wait, I say, can't technology save trees and reduce air pollution? Aren't we living more gently on the earth by not driving to campus or using paper to print handouts and assignments? That's the debate
